Commission on Education

The Education Commission was originally established in 1970’s, as part of the Ursuline Federation, to articulate the ideals of Ursuline Education in written format.   These were first published in a booklet “Seed for the Sowing” in 1975.   Subsequently, with the setting up of Boards of Management in Secondary Schools, a pamphlet on “The Religious and Educational Philosophy of Ursuline Schools” was published to meet the Schedule II requirements of Boards.

Following the General chapter of 1991, a formal structure of the commission was set up with a specific remit in its Acts of Chapter.   Membership consisted mainly of Principals of Secondary Schools and other volunteers.   The commission has been under the chairmanship of Miss Mary Butler, Ursuline , Thurles, from the start.   Its primary function is as a support to leadership in our schools, and secondly, to draft documents and research issues on matters of relevance to the schools.     Projects undertaken are as follows:

  • Coloured booklet on the Religious and Educational Philosophy of Ursuline Schools.   This is now in its second revision.
  • Policy on Intercultural Education, in the light of emerging new ethnic minorities in our schools.
  • Survey of needs and levels of disadvantaged pupils in our schools.
  • Organisation of inter-schools Literary and Artistic competitions for the 475th celebration.
  • Ensuring the continued importance of the Religious Education Programme in Ursuline Schools by supporting the Religious Education Teams in our schools
  • Annual leadership Training for School Prefects or leadership teams, and annual inter-Primary School Sports for 6th standards pupils.

The Commission meets quarterly at Ursuline Convent, Thurles.
