Sr Margaret Mary revisits Kenya

This year Sr Margaret Mary O’Connell (Shannonbridge Community) spent four weeks in Kenya as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations.  It is nine years since she left Kenya having served there for a total of 27 years.  Sr Margaret Mary first went to Kenya to teach Home Economics in Saint Angela’s School in Mutune in 1980. From there she moved to ministry in the Social Centre (now Saint Columba’s) for 20 years. This was followed by 3 years in Lorugumu in the Turkana Desert teaching at the secondary school there. After a short time back in Ireland she returned to Kenya to the Social Centre in Mutune until 2007.  She says of her visit: “what a joy for me to return there and receive such warm hospitality from our Kenyan sisters – even though I could hardly believe I knew so few of them.  It was wonderful to join a full chapel for Mass and Prayer with professed sisters, novices and aspirants and to share in their beautiful harmonies… a very emotional and yet enriching experience.”
