Ursulines: Shannon Drive

The Ursuline Community, Shannon drive, Avondale, Waterford came into existence on 26th August 1991. This happened following a study of our Charism by the Waterford Community. After much discernment it was decided to open a small house modelled on Angela’s original idea of living among the people. Volunteers were requested and Sisters Charles Raleigh and Maureen Boland from the Waterford Community and Sr. Mary Cosgrove from Sligo volunteered and were appointed by Sr. Mary Gilbride. The official opening of the house was on September 14th 1991.

The General Council of that time came for the official opening (Sr Mary Gilbride, then congregational leader; Srs Kitty Kelly, Mary Hourigan, Berchmans Whelan and Anne Conway and were joined for this formal occasion by the sisters from Saint Mary’s Community.  There was a short prayer service and then a letter approving the foundation from the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Dr Michael Russell was read.

Currently Sr. Mary Cosgrove is involved in School Chaplaincy and Encounter Retreats while Sr. Maureen Boland is involved in the Parish, Mount Sion Centre with refugees, and music and dance.
