We all love surprises! This one came my way courtesy of a Journal of Medicine!
The Director of the George Washington School of Medicine maintains that the brain of an elderly person is much more practical than is commonly believed. At this age, the interaction of the left and right hemispheres of the brain becomes more harmonious, that expands our creative possibilities and is why people over the age of 60 can find many personalities who have just started their creative abilities.
Of course, the brain is no longer as fast as it was in youth. However, it gains in flexibility. Therefore, with age we are more likely to make the right decisions and be less exposed to negative emotions. The peak of the human intellectual ability occurs around the age of 70 when the brain begins to work in full force.
Over time the amount of mylin in the brain increases, a substance that facilitates the rapid passage of signals between neurons. Due to this, intellectual ability increases by 300 per cent compared to the average.
Also interesting is the fact that after 60 years of age, a person can use two hemispheres at the same time. This allows us to solve much more complex problems.
Professor Muchi Uri of the University of Montreal, believes that an elderly brain chooses the path that consumes less energy, eliminates the unnecessary and leaves only the right options to solve problems. A study was conducted in which different age groups participated. When doing the test, the younger people were very confused, while those over 60 years old made the right decisions easily and quickly.
Characteristics of the Brain of an Older Person
- The neurons of the brain do not die, as everyone around says.
- Distraction and forgetfulness arise due to an over-abundance of information, therefore, an older person does not need to focus on unnecessary trifles.
- From the age of 60, when making decisions a person uses both hemispheres unlike young people who only use one.
Conclusion: If a person leads a healthy life-style, is mobile, has adequate physical exercise and is mentally active, intellectual activity does not decline with age but simply GROWS reaching a peak at the age of 80-90.
